The YPTW follow spot

I've been so busy this past week at Young People's Theatre Workshop (YPTW), but it has all been worth it.
The show has opened and it is going well!! I'm so thrilled for the kids!
The spot operator became sick after opening night, so I've been running the spotlight since then. It is a lot of fun and I love learning new things about theater. I feel the more I learn about various aspects of the craft, the better I am at all other elements including being a director or actor.
Ultimately, I said yes to running the spot to make the children look good. I felt that if I jumped into that new roll, I'd be aware of what was needed, with the assistance of the stage manager. I know the show and have blocked many of the scenes that have spot cues, so I know where the actor is going and what he/she is thinking. That has helped make the transition easy and meaningful. Hopefully, anyone who has watched the show when I was running spot was able to focus on the actor and ignore the spot. My idea of a smooth technical production is being able to allow the tech to blend with the stage action, not upstage it or distract from it.
I've been working with Mary on YPTW Idol, similar to American Idol. It is paired with a silent auction to fund raise for YPTW. I hope tons of people will come on May 30th to take part in our celebration.
